The Genes

The Genes

The Genes played at few friends’ parties in 1990, then played their first gig at the PICASSO Bar in Brisbane early 1991.  Bands like Powderfinger and Custard were just starting out. The Stone Roses and The Happy Mondays were where things were at. The Funkyard was the most happening club in Australia and there was some great music coming out of Brisbane.

Then Nirvana and grunge exploded and separated everything. If you weren’t grunge you were something else. The Genes played at the legendary Spring Livid and Livid festivals. Began touring, playing with Hoodoo Gurus, Deb Conway, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, Yothu Yindi and just playing wherever they could.

The Genes never really got major radio airplay, not really fitting in – they just kept on recording their music. Since 1991 they have released 7 albums. With over 1000 songs written, Nolan Angell, Morgan Angell and Dominic Cutcliffe have stuck to creating the music they love, with little regard for commercial success. Moving from Brisbane to Sydney to Coffs Harbour then to Cabarita Beach, as long as it’s close to the beach everything is all right.

Three record deals with fledgling companies has seen The Genes struggle to become household names but their music remains treasured by those who take it in. Singer/songwriter Nolan Angell remains committed to creating some sort of mysterious magical moments in songs and their recordings. Chasing a buzzing sound which sometimes happens and sometimes doesn’t.
