Kirra Surfstock Is Coming!
Kirra Surfstock Festival – Ready to Rock!
The Kirra SurfStock Festival will be held from Currumbin to Kirra on November 5 – 8th 2009 and is set to rock with a massive line up of events!
With the aim of returning Kirra Point to its rightful surfing Mecca status, and bought to you by the organisers of the Kirra Beach Australia Day 2009 Paddle Out that attracted nearly 3000 people, Kirra Surfstock’s main events include:
JR Surfboards Junior Teams Surfing Competition
Saturday 7th November sees the JR Surfboards Junior Teams event. An exciting format, 6 man teams go head to head, evoking the classic Australian team spirit. The contest will be mobile between Kirra & D’Bah and kicks off at 8am (Qld).
All Roads Lead To Kirra
Featuring 2 events running in tandem, the Greenline Paddlesurf SUP Race and the Denis Callinan Memorial Beach Walk, both events are open to all and start at 7am (Qld) on Sunday 8th November from the Elephant Rock car park in Currumbin and make their way towards Kirra.
Book Launches
Surfing legend Bob McTavish launches his new book, “Stoked” and will be signing a limited number of copies at Kirra Surf from 4pm (Qld) on Friday 6th. And Sandra L Rodgers will also be launching her new novel “Waves of Torment”, a story of the Sydney surfing scene set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Catch Sandra at Bilinga Surf Club, Saturday 7th at 5.30pm (Qld)
Jim Beam Australian Surf Movie Festival
Always a great show, Tim Bonython’s Jim Beam Australian Surf Movie Festival is a must see. Showing at two venues – Coolangatta Sands on Thursday 5th at 7pm (Qld) and at an outdoor family movie night at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday 7th November from 8pm (Qld). This years’ festival includes footage of the May Day 2009 swell at Kirra.
Other events include the Miss Surfstock Beauty Quest, charity fundraisers, beach volleyball contests, kids activities, beach markets, dune care plantings and more live music than you can shake a stick at!
All events have been approved by Gold Coast City Council, and wouldn’t be possible without the help of so many community groups and our major sponsors: Connecting Southern Gold Coast & Kirra Surf. The event is held in association with the Kirra Business Group, Gold Coast City Council and also runs alongside Surfrider Foundation Australia’s Annual Conference.
The Kirra SurfStock Festival follows in the wake of Gold Coast City Council’s works to remove 20,000 cubic metres of sand from the once iconic Kirra Point and Reef. These works came about because of the amazing support for the Bring Back Kirra campaign that culminated in the Australia Day 2009 Paddle Out Rally and also saw the State Government pledge $1.5 million to help get Kirra back.
The Inaugural Kirra SurfStock Festival has a little bit of everything; a coastal club sandwich for our community to celebrate the lifestyle culture and focus on our foreshore future. A fun filled grass roots gathering aiming to bring the community together, raise awareness of environmental issues and support both local businesses and charities.
We’d like to see it become an annual event, so please come along and show us your support!
