Bob McTavish – “Stoked!” Book Launch
Legendary surfer/ shaper Bob McTavish will launch his much anticipated book during the Kirra SurfStock Festival in November. The man who created the shortboard revolution, redesigned the V-bottom and was the innovator of the Fantastic Plastic Machine, Bob McTavish will appear at Kirra Surf retail store on Friday 6th of November at 4pm for a book launching and public signing. McTavish will then follow onto the Kirra Surf Club as a special guest for the Friday night Surfrider Foundation Fundraiser and talk about his highly illustrious surfing career.
McTavish started as a copywriter in Ipswich at 16 and went on to be one of Australia’s’ most influential surfing characters, winning the Qld State open men’s title at Rainbow Bay in 1965, he finished runner-up to Nat Young in the Australian Titles held at Coolangatta in 1966 and then retired from competition to focus on the art of modern surfboard shaping and progressive surfing ideas.
Together with Nat Young and American George Greenough that helped create the shortboard revolution in Noosa. Nat Young went on to win the 1966 World Title on a Bob McTavish shaped board called “Sam”. Nat’s win on Bob’s board changed the face of surfing forever heralding in a new era of aggressive powerful maneuvers which replaced the old ‘walk the plank and nose-riding’ era of the 60’s.
As James Brown is recognized as the Father of American Soul Music, McTavish is regarded as the Soul figure of Australian surfing and one of the greatest surfing innovators in the World. His contribution to modern surfing is legendary and Bob is excited to help launch Kirra SurfStock with his book.

Bob will be available to sign a limited number of hard copies of his book at Kirra Surf at 4pm on Friday 6th of November and will be a special guest at the Kirra Surf Club Fundraiser for the Surfrider Foundation later the same evening where he will be talking more about his life and world travel experiences featured in the book.
“Stoked!” by Bob McTavish, with a foreword written by well known Australian writer Tim Winton goes on general sale in November.
